Characteristics of the nutrients in food

Define: Protein* A nutrient needed to build, repair, and maintain body tissues
Define: Carbohydrates* Nutrient that provides energy
Define: Fats* Nutrients that are a source of energy and make certain vitamins available for the use in our body
Define: Vitamins Nutrients that help chemical reactions take place in the body
Define: Minerals Nutritents that regualte many chemical reactions in the body
Define: Water A nutrient that: is part of blood, helps digestion, remove waste, regulate body temperature, and cushions joints and spine
Which parts of the body is protein found? Parts of muscle, bones, blood, cell membranes, hormones; energy, strength, resist infection
Foods with protein ANIMAL PRODUCTS: meat, turkey, fish, milk, chicken, eggs
Simple Carbs: SUGAR for quick energy: fruits & honey, soda & candy/cakes
Complex Carbs: STARCHES for long lasting energy: rice, wheat, oats, bread
Characteristics of Fat: Cushions body organs
Saturated Fat: DAIRY & ANIMAL products: butter, beef, bacon, milk
Unsaturated Fat: PLANTS & FISH, no risk of heart disease
Most nutrients have 1g=4cal except for... Fats (1g=9cal)
Water Soluble vitamins: B,C (not stored in body)
Fat Soluble vitamins: A,D,E,K (stand in body)
Foods with vitamins: Fruits, vegetables, cereal, wheat, bread, nuts, fish
6 kinds of minerals: Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium
Foods with minerals: Dairy-calcium, Redmeat-Iron, Green vegetables-magnesium and potassium, fruits
Characteristics of water: 6-8 glasses a day, lose water in wine & perspiration
Foods with water: Soups, vegetables, fruits, juice
