What is bulk billing? When the doctor accepts Medicare as a full payment
What is a barrier to accessing healthcare? High costs of treatment
What is Medicare? Medicare provides access to most health and hospital services at low or no cost for Aus citizens, permanent resident and eligible visitors.
What does PBS help Australians with? PBS helps Australians afford essential prescription medicines by lowering the cost, making them more affordable
Two advantages of private health insurance Having private health insurance is less wait times and choice of care.
Two examples of a barrier that might stop someone from accessing healthcare Financial barriers = patient/family can not pay for the added cost of treatment. Geographical barriers = live too far away from a hospital/GP
Why will someone choose to get private health insurance if they already have Medicare People may do this to get access to private hospitals and faster treatment.
What is a gap fee? Gap fee = difference between how much a doctor charges you and how much Medicare or your health fund will give you back.
System related barriers Factors = the healthcare system. This includes time & availability
Patient related barriers Factors = patient individual and social environment. This = history of negative experiences with the healthcare system/anxiety & fear with doctors
Health Literacy Factors = prevent people understanding and using health information to make informed choices. This = lack of knowledge and cognitive or intellectual disabilities.
Cultural and Linguistic related barriers Factors can impact communication between a patient and their doctors. This = cultural and language differences.
Geographical related barriers Factors that can impact location and availability of transportation. This = distance to the nearest healthcare provider and transportation
Financial related barriers Factors can impact the the amount of money patients might have to pay. This = increased out-of-pocket costs, dental care and accessing allied health services
