What are the macronutrients and how much of each should we consume everyday? Protein (12-15%), Carbs (45-65%), fats (25-30%)
What are the micronutrients? Vitamins and minerals
Why is it important to eat a good variety of foods every day? So we can get a variety of nutrients
The most efficient (quickest) source of energy and helps in glycogen stores. Name some examples: Carbohydrates (Whole grains, beans, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables)
Nutrient that is made up of amino acids and are the building blocks of the body. Proteins
What are three important functions of water in the body? Controls body temperature Removes waste Lubricates joints
Name examples of minerals: Magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium
What is a Calorie? Your body burns them for energy
Why do we need calories? We need them to keep our body functioning and growing
What is a Serving Size? The amount of calories and nutrients you get from the food item
What is the % Daily Value? References the amount of nutrients to consume or not to exceed every day
What are health claims? Claims that have been reviewed by the FDA and are allowed on food products to show that a food/food component may reduce the risk of disease or a health related condition
How many calories are in one gram of fat, protein, and carbohydrates? Protein: 4 Fat: 9 Carb: 4
What are food allergies and what are some common triggers? Food allergies are an abnormal response to a food, triggered by the body’s immune system Common triggers: Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shelfish
What are symptoms of an allergic reaction caused by food? itching in your mouth or swelling GI symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps and pain Tightening of the throat and trouble breathing Drop in blood pressure
What nutrients are important in a pregame meal, and what is the best time to eat before an athletic event? Carbs, Fats, and proteins are important for pregame. It 3-4 hours and have a small snack.
What is Glycogen and how long can a balanced diet provide fuel for exercise? It is carbs stored in the liver and muscles. The fuel will last for 90-120 minutes of exercise
Which nutrient is important for pregnant women to consume enough of in order to prevent birth defects? Folic Acid, Iron, Calcium, Vitamin D
Define Diabetes Diabetes is a medical condition where blood sugar is prone to spikes and crashes due to problems with insulin function.
what are some nutrition tips for someone with diabetes? Tips: Follow a consistent meal plan and schedule Eat a balanced diet with a variety of foodsCheck nutrition labels Choose lower fat options and limited saturated fats
Describe each of the Plant based diets: Vegan: Includes only plant foods Semi-Vegetarian: Centered around plant foods, with limited or occasional inclusion of meat Lacto-Vegetarian: Plant based diet that includes dairy products like milk, cream, yogurt and cheese. It excludes meat, fish, egg
What is the common Essential Nutrient that is most likely lacking in Plant Based Diets and where can you get this without consuming animal products? Vitamin B12 Vitamin D. It can be found in broccoli, soy milk, tofu, mushrooms, and yeast.
What are the benefits of a Plant Based Diet? Decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertnsion
What is Anorexia? Characterized by a distorted body image, with an unwarranted fear of being overweight.
What are some symptoms of Anorexia? Symptoms: Person will eat very little on purpose, trying to maintain a below normal weight through starvation or too much exercise
What is Bulimia? An emotional eating disorder involving distortion of body image and an excessive desire to lose weight.
What are some symptoms of Bulimia? Symptoms: Binges and purges, has excuses to go to the bathroom directly after meals, weight often seems pretty normal
What is Binge Eating Frequently consuming unusually large amounts of food in one sitting.
Why might someone engage in this type of behavior? Stress or body dysmorphia
Where can someone go to get help with an eating disorder? Hotlines and doctors
What is a Fad Diet? Diet plans sold as the best and fastest approach to losing weight.
Why do people choose Fad Diets? Because they want quick results
What is missing in each of the Fad Diets? Important sources of nutrients and eating at certain times in the day
What is intuitive eating and what does it want you to focus on the most? It is a guide to breaking the diet cycle and consists of 10 principles to promote a healthy body image and relationship with food.
