| status | position held in a society, often shown by the level of respect a person is given eg. doctors Ascribed: given at birth (royalty) Achieved: gained through own efforts (educational achievements) |
| society | a group of people sharing a common purpose or way of life |
| mores | established norms and values eg. honesty is important |
| social mobility | when people move from one socio-economic group to another eg. student from the lower socio-economic group studies and becomes a surgeon |
| secondary social group | large group of people who are not very close eg. classmates |
| primary social group | small group of people who are very close eg. family |
| kinship | blood relatives eg. brothers |
| socialisation | passing on norms, mores and values from one generation to the next. These behaviours help people to fit into society. Primary socialisation occurs in the family eg. learning it is wrong to steal. It is a life long process |
