values beliefs and attitudes about what is right and what is wrong
culture the way of life in a society eg. language
status position held in a society, often shown by the level of respect a person is given eg. doctors Ascribed: given at birth (royalty) Achieved: gained through own efforts (educational achievements)
society a group of people sharing a common purpose or way of life
mores established norms and values eg. honesty is important
social mobility when people move from one socio-economic group to another eg. student from the lower socio-economic group studies and becomes a surgeon
secondary social group large group of people who are not very close eg. classmates
primary social group small group of people who are very close eg. family
kinship blood relatives eg. brothers
socialisation passing on norms, mores and values from one generation to the next. These behaviours help people to fit into society. Primary socialisation occurs in the family eg. learning it is wrong to steal. It is a life long process
social institution recognised arrangements for people in a society eg. marriage
social change any changes that occur in society eg. the introduction of divorce laws in Ireland
