exercise | start with very low impact, avoid jumping/running, short frequent leash walks 3-4x daily (5-10 min ok to start), care/standing exercises; if available, swimming 1 min increments 3x weekly |
exercise one the pet is conditioned | > 60 min of exercise per day for dog, 3-5 periods of intense play > 5 min per day for cat; +/- NSAIDs for patients with advanced OA |
follow-up appointments | weight checks, even a 5-6% weight loss will result in a lameness reduction, aim for 1-2% weight loss per week; if in hospital, 2-4% weight loss per week okay, cats 0.5-2% weight loss per week |
