how does obesity make the pet feel? chronic fatigue, decreased energy and vitality, aches and pains, increased risk of depression and anxiety
how to help your #1 patient? diet, exercise, positive affirmations, owner involvement, follow-up is key
goals of weight loss don't chase number on scale, aim for quality of life, be able to walk ___ min, ability to walk up/down stairs, initiate play activity, get up easier
diet and weight loss keep it simple and start with small goals, aim for 1-2% weight loss per week
diet increase fiber for satiety, increased protein to retain muscle while losing fat; for dogs and cats >BCS 7-9 = therapeutic diet; feed daily caloric needs in 4-6 smaller daily meals
therapeutic diet they can eat more, keeps them satisfied longer, helps maintain muscle, avoid nutrient deficiencies, more likely to reach target weight
meals meals in frozen dog food toys, break up daily kcals into multiple daily meals, reserve kcals for daily treats, food puzzles/kongs
RER calculation (BW in kg x 30) + 70
what BCS is ideal? 4-5 out of 9
BCS 6 out of 9 animal is 10% overweight
BCS 7 out of 9 animal is 20% overweight
BCS 8 out of 9 animal is 30% overweight
BCS 9 out of 9 animal is 40% overweight
BCS > 9 out of 9 morbidly obese, > 40% overweight
DER calculations RER x 0.9 for BCS 6/9, RER x 0.8 for BCS 7/9, RER x 0.7 for BCS 8/9. RER x 0.6 for BCS 9/9
how should you measure the amount of food as you give? some cups are not the same, gram scale may be the way to go
exercise start with very low impact, avoid jumping/running, short frequent leash walks 3-4x daily (5-10 min ok to start), care/standing exercises; if available, swimming 1 min increments 3x weekly
exercise one the pet is conditioned > 60 min of exercise per day for dog, 3-5 periods of intense play > 5 min per day for cat; +/- NSAIDs for patients with advanced OA
follow-up appointments weight checks, even a 5-6% weight loss will result in a lameness reduction, aim for 1-2% weight loss per week; if in hospital, 2-4% weight loss per week okay, cats 0.5-2% weight loss per week
owner incentives free bag of dog food 1st ____ lbs of weight loss, remind clients of health benefits, cost benefits, print award/picture/button/badge; anything to recognize their achievement helps
communication tips for success WHO is feeding the pet, WHAT foods are they feeding, WHY are they feeding; FOOD DOES NOT EQUAL LOVE
key communication strategies stay positive, don't make the client feel guilty, avoid words like obese, fat, cruel, etc., give simple and clear instructions, get client involved, focus on wellness (I want ___ to feel good, etc.), alternative ways to show love (petting/affection, etc.)
5 key strategies educate, plan together with client, food (type and amount), exercise (right for pet and client), follow-up
