Pathogens
| Q | A |
|---|---|
| What is a infectious disease? | Any disease caused by a pathogen that can pass from one living thing to another. |
| What are the five pathogens? | 1. Bacteria 2. Virus 3. Fungi 4. Parasite 5. Protozoa |
| What is Bacteria | One-celled organism found everywhere - Can be good or bad - Antibiotics are used to kill or neutralize the bad bacteria Examples of bacteria: Strep Throat, Sinus Infection, E Coli, TB, Bubonic Plague |
| What is a Virus | 1/100 the size of bacteria - Made of Protein and DNA - Vaccines can help prevent the virus from making us sick - Antiviral meds can help the symptoms. - Immune System has to fight it Examples: Flu, Common Cold, Coronavirus, Measles, HIV |
| What is a live attenuated vaccine | Made up of the pathogen itself ( a weaker version ). This type of vaccine creates a very strong, long lasting immune response. |
| What is a inactive vaccine | Pathogens have been killed, this type of vaccine is effective in making sure pathogens don't develop into disease. |
| What is a subunit vaccine | Made from the antigen, the part of the pathogen that triggers the immune response. |
| What is a DNA vaccine | This type of vaccine isolates our genes that make specific antigens needed to trigger the immune response. |
| What is fungi | An organism that uses and absorbs nutrients from living or dead organisms - Anti-fungal cream, sprays, and pills can help eliminate fungus Examples: Athletes Foot, Ringworm |
| What is a parasite | An organism that lives on or in a host. - Causes harm to that host - Treated by medications Example: Tapeworm |
| What is Protozoa | One celled organism found in contaminated food or water. - Bigger than bacteria - Can be transmitted by mosquito - Treated with medication Example: Malaria |
