stomach | where food is stored before it is digested |
esophagus | a long tube that connects the mouth to the stomach |
pharynx | the throat |
trachea | the windpipe |
saliva | a digestive juice in the mouth |
epiglottis | a tiny flap of cartilage that covers the trachea during swallowing |
digestion | the breaking down of food into a form the body can use |
absorption | the process that makes food available to your body |
gastric juice | a digestive juice in the stomach |
gallbladder | where bile is stored |
villi | fingerlike projections in the intestines that absorb food |
liver | the largest organ inside the body |
small intestine | where most food is digested |
pancreas | where insulin and pancreatic juice are produced |
colon | carries the waste parts of food from the body |
fiber | the rough parts of some fruits, vegetables, and grains that cannot be digested |
kidney | a bean-shaped organ; reabsorbs water and other useful materials back into the blood and sends filtered wastes to the bladder |
bile or pancreatic juice | a digestive juice in the small intestine |
