Crime and Punishment

Crimes are split into what 3 categories? Property, Person, State
Poverty Starvation, unemployed, need to feed family, desperation for survival
Mental Illness Abnormal State of mind, doesn't know difference between right or wrong, no remorse, past experience that gives them mental health
Upbringing Brought up in home surrounded by domestic abuse, drinking, these ways of life instilled into child which may lead them to engage in such activities in future
Opposition to Unjust Law Some people break laws that they believe to be unjust in order to protest against them. Laws may be based on equality or deny basic human rights
Addiction Addiction to drugs, sex, alcohol or money, leading them to commit crimes which feed their cravings
Deterrence Discourages someone for committing crime or REPEATING an offence again through an unpleasant experience . Burglar sentenced to a year in prison will find it unpleasant and hopefully not do it again
Retribution Society seeking justice through the legal system by means of punishment, eg. being sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder.
Reformation Seeking to help a person relinquish an immoral lifestyle
Protection Some criminals too dangerous, behaviours too ingrained for reformation, and can't be integrated back into society for the safety of public because they have no chance of changing
