| Poverty | Starvation, unemployed, need to feed family, desperation for survival |
| Mental Illness | Abnormal State of mind, doesn't know difference between right or wrong, no remorse, past experience that gives them mental health |
| Upbringing | Brought up in home surrounded by domestic abuse, drinking, these ways of life instilled into child which may lead them to engage in such activities in future |
| Opposition to Unjust Law | Some people break laws that they believe to be unjust in order to protest against them. Laws may be based on equality or deny basic human rights |
| Addiction | Addiction to drugs, sex, alcohol or money, leading them to commit crimes which feed their cravings |
| Deterrence | Discourages someone for committing crime or REPEATING an offence again through an unpleasant experience . Burglar sentenced to a year in prison will find it unpleasant and hopefully not do it again |
| Retribution | Society seeking justice through the legal system by means of punishment, eg. being sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder. |
| Reformation | Seeking to help a person relinquish an immoral lifestyle |
| Protection | Some criminals too dangerous, behaviours too ingrained for reformation, and can't be integrated back into society for the safety of public because they have no chance of changing |
