| Congenital | diseases that are present at birth |
| Chronic | diseases that are present or recur over a long period of time |
| Acute | diseases where symptoms are severe and their course is short |
| Degenerative Diseases | diseases that deteriorate or impair an organ or the structure of cells and the tissues of which they are a part. |
| Infectious Diseases | diseases that result from activities of living creatures, usually microorganisms, that invade the body. |
| Contagion | the transmission of infectious disease agents between people, may be direct through person-to-person contact or indirect contact. |
| Vectors | Contagion from an insect bite |
| Fomites | Contagion from things like blankets, money, or water |
| Clinical | refers to the appearance of symptoms that can be presented to a physician for observation and treatment |
| Subclinical | condition where an infectious agent may enter the body, multiply, stimulate the production of antibodies, and be eliminated from the body without the person's being consciously aware of any illness. |
| Latency Period | an infectious disease period between the time the infection occurs and the appearance of clinical symptoms |
| Incubation | time for a disease to adapt to its host and multiply and become numerous in its mode of transmission |
| Endemic | a disease that is constantly present in an area |
| Hypoendemic | a endemic disease that has a "popcorn" transmission |
| Hyperendemic | a endemic disease that has an intense transmission |
| Epidemic Disease | An outbreak spreading through a population or or widespread degenerative disease |
| Incidence | refers to the number of cases of a disease diagnosed or reported for a population during a defined period of time, most commonly a year |
| Prevelance | refers to the number of people in a population sick with a disease at a particular time, regardless of when the illness began |
