| affect | an outward display on the face reflecting an emotional thought |
| bulimia | people gorging on excessive amounts of food, then purging to rid themselves of the food |
| delirium | acute confusion, disorientation, and agitation due to chemicals, drugs, or alcohol in the blood |
| delirium tremens | (DT) caused by withdrawal from alcoholic intoxication with restlessness, tremors, hallucinations, sweating and increased heart rate |
| depersonalization | loss of connection between personal thoguhts and a sence of self and the environment |
| dopamine | neurotransmitter in the brain ; responsible for the euphoria and excitement, but also schizophrenia and depression |
| epinephrine | neurotransmitter of the sympathetic division of the nervous system ; prepares body for "fight or flight" response |
| fetishism | obtaining sexual arousal from objexts, rather than a person |
| fornix | an area along the floor of each lateral ventricle, connecting the hippocampus and amygdaloid bodies |
| fugue | impulsive flight from one's life and familiar surroundings after a traumatic event |
| gyrus | any of the prominent, rounded, elevated convulations on the surgaces of the cerebral hemispheres |
| hippocampus | an elongated, curving structure with two heads, one located in each of the temporal lobes |
| histrionic | excessively dramatic, insincere, or artificial |
| hypothalamus | an area of the brain located below the thalamus which forms the floor and part of the walls of the third ventricle |
| ideation | the formation of ideas or mental images |
| malingering | exhibiting factitious medical or psychiatric symptoms to get a tangible reward |
| manic | frenzied, agitated or frantic (Greek for "inclined to madness") |
| masochism | obtaining sexual arousal through abuse, pain, humiliation, or bondage that is done deliberately by another person |
| millieu | the social setting of a mental patient |
| mood | a person's prevailing, predominant emotion |
| Munchausen syndrome | exhibiting fictitious medical or psychiatric symptoms ; motivation is for assistance, attention, compassion, pity, or being excused from normal expectations of life |
| narcissism | a person with an exaggerated sense of self-worth and importance |
| norepinephrine | neurotransmitter of the sympathetic division of the nervous system ; controls heart and respiratory rate and blood pressure when the body is active or exercising |
| panic | severe, overwhelming anxiety without an identifiable cause |
| paranoia | aa person who believes that other people are trying to hurt them |
| proxy | a person authorized to act on behalf of someone else |
| rape | nonconsenting adult |
| Rorschach test | a set of cards with abstract shapes ; patients are asked to describe what the shape represent |
| sadism | obtaining power, control, and sexual arousal by deliberately causing abuse, pain, humiliation, or bondage to another person |
| serotonin | neurotransmitter in the brain and spinal cord ; can cause depression or violent behavior |
| thalamus | an area in the center of the cerebrum whcih forms the walls of the third ventricle |
| therapy | the treatmnet of illness or disability |
| Tourette's syndrome | frequent, spontaneous, involuntary muscle tics, vocal tics or comments that are socially inappropriate, vulgar, obscene, or racist |
| voyeurism | obtaining power, control, and sexual arousal by secretively viewing other people who are naked or having sexual relations |
