Term | Definition |
---|---|
Abrasions | scrapes to the outer layer of the skin against a hard surface-type of wound |
Lacerations | caused by a sharp object that slices through multiple layers of skin-type of wound |
Punctures | a small but deep hole; caused by a sharp and narrow object-type of wound |
Avulsions | skin is partly or completely torn away; usually requires stitches-type of wound |
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) | a first-aid procedure that combines rescue breaths and chest compressions to supply oxygen to the body until normal body functions can resume |
CPR for adults | alternate 2 rescue breaths with 30 chest compressions |
Compressions | push hard and fast on the center of the victim’s chest |
Airway | tilt the victim’s head back, and lift the chin to open the airway |
Breathing | give mouth-to-mouth rescue breath |
Defibrillator | a device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm |
Heimlich maneuver | the common action taken to dislodge something that someone is choking on; five back blows and thrusts right below the ribcage |
Shock | a life-threatening condition in which the heart is not delivering an adequate supply of blood to the body |
Signs of shock | old, clammy skin; weak or rapid pulse; altered breathing; dull, staring eyes; faintness; weakness; confusion; & loss of consciousness-call 911 |
Fracture | a break in a bon |
Dislocation | a separation of a bone from its normal position in a joint Signs: severe pain, swelling, bruising, and inability to move |
Concussion | a jarring injury to the brain that can cause unconsciousness Sensitivity to light, loss of consciousness, loss of balance, confusion, headaches, dizziness, etc. |
