CCMA CH 7

CCMA CH 7 (Pathophysiology - Common Injuries)

TermDefinition
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL tear) causes: plant and twist motion of the foot and knee symptoms: pain, swelling, knee-buckling diagnoses: physical exam, radiographic confirmation (MRI) treatment: RICE, surgery, allograft, physical therapy
Concussion causes: head impact symptoms: nausea, loss of balance, disorientation, headache diagnosis: physical exam, neurologic testing, brain CT treatment: rest, treatment of symptoms
Muscle strain causes: overexertion of a muscle not properly warmed up for activity level symptoms: pain, swelling, "tight" feeling diagnosis: physical exam, MRI treatment: RICE, avoiding physical stain to the area
Epicondylitis (tennis elbow) causes: overuse of elbow causing tiny ligament tears symptoms: swelling, tenderness, grip weakness diagnosis: physical exam, x-ray, MRI treatment: rest, ice, NSAIDs, forearm strap, extended break from aggravating activity
Rotator cuff tear causes: repetitive stress of shoulder joint symptoms: pain, weakness, inability to raise arm over head diagnosis: physical exam, x-ray, MRI treatment: rest, NSAIDs, cortisone injection to shoulder joint, surgery
Bone fracture causes: impact injury -- bone cracking/breaking ; stress fractures: overuse/repetitive stress symptoms: pain, swelling, loss of function diagnosis: phys. exam, x-ray, CT if plain films aren't clear treatment: immobilization w/ internal/external device
Joint dislocation causes: impact injury removing bones from proper joint alignment symptoms: pain, loss of sensation, immobility diagnosis: physical exam, x-ray, MRI, CT treatment: realignment of bones, immobilization, physical therapy, surgery
Common tests blood work, urinalysis, diagnostic imaging (x-ray, MRI, CT, ultrasound)
Tests w/ Radiation (minimal risk) x-rays, CT, angiography, mammography, nuclear medicine
Test w/o Radiation MRI, ultrasound
Contrast Material used to lighten dark structures on imaging studies - Air, barium gadolinium, iodine (orally, IV, or injection)
Nuclear Medicine uses radioactive isotopes to collect in areas of high metabolic activity - SPECT scan (brain after stoke), PET scan (brain related disorders), MUGA (heart evaluation)
Incidence occurrence of new diseases or cases in a specific population over a distinct time period ex) number of athletes who suffer from ACL injuries will likely be higher than kindergarten teachers who do
Prevalence proportion of a population who have a particular disease over a specific period of time
Risk Factors characteristics that make a person more likely to suffer a disease or injury - modifiable or non-modifiable
Determinants of Health a wide range of factors influence a person's and a population's health status - relationship between biology & genetics, behavior, availability of health resources, social standards, policy/lawmakers involvement
Morbidity vs Mortality Morbidity: measure of sickness or disease within a specific population Mortality: measure of deaths in an area or population
Common comorbid diseases diseases or conditions in one person at the same time - the more diseases, the less healthy the person
Upstream management in population health refers to health care organizations becoming increasingly involved in the health of its population - community outreach programs, education helps improve health
Endemic illness illness that is constantly present within a community
Epidemic illness when an infectious disease spreads rapidly to a large number of people
Pandemic world-wide outbreak of a disease
