CCMA CH 7 REVIEW (Pathophysiology - Reproductive)

TermDefinition
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) causes: increased age and level of dihydrotestosterone symptoms: feeling of full bladder, weak urine flow, needing to urinate often treatment: alpha blockers, minimally invasive surgical procedures, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
Hydrocele causes: failure of inguinal ring to close properly in development, injury or swelling of scrotum symptoms: few symptoms, pain, increased size of scrotum treatment: surgery if symptomatic
Prostate Cancer causes: unknown, genetics(?) symptoms: pain, erectile dysfunction, dysuria treatment: hormone therapy, radiation therapy, surgery, cryosurgery, chemotherapy
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) causes: unprotected contact with infected tissue or fluids symptoms: (depends on infection/disease), pelvic/penile pain, sores, dysuria, itching or discharge, body rash, infertility treatment: (depends on type), medication, cryosurgery, chemotherapy
Endometriosis causes: unknown symptoms: most have no symptoms, pelvic pain, esp. during menses, painful urination and defecations, infertility issues treatment: NSAIDs, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, oral contraceptives, progestins, surgical intervention
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease causes: untreated STDs/STIs, multiple sexual partners, frequent douching symptoms: lower abdominal pain, back pain, fever, rapid pulse, vaginal discharge, pain during sex treatment: antibiotic treatment, surgical intervention to treat scarring
Cervical Cancer causes: particular strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) symptoms: abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge, lower abdominal or pelvic pain, pain during sex treatment: surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiation therapy
