(Anorexia Nervosa) warning signs/symptoms (mental) | - perfectionism - extreme sensitivity to criticism - excessive fear of weight gain - denial of feelings of hunger - unrealistic image of self as obese |
(Anorexia Nervosa) warning signs/symptoms (behavioral) | - self-starvation - weight loss of at least 15% - amenorrhea - excessive exercising - ritualistic eating behavior - extreme control behavior |
(Anorexia Nervosa) treatment | hospitalization w/ parenteral nutrition/nasogastric feedings, psychotherapy, patient and family education is essential |
(Bulimia Nervosa) background | - eating large amounts of food, then purging by self-induce vomiting, laxatives, or diuretics - controlled behavior aimed at gaining control of weight, dieting ; can feel guilty when too much or high calorie foods - average age is in the 20s |
(Bulimia Nervosa) warning signs/symptoms (mental) | - mood swings - depression and guilt after bingeing and purging |

(Binge-eating Disorder) background/definition | - don't restrict diet between bingeing episodes, eat quickly until uncomfortably full, eat when not hungry, eat alone due to shame & guilt of overeating - food becomes addiction /coping mechanism; predisposes patients to alcohol & substance use disorders |
(Binge-eating Disorder) effects | - manifests as weight gain/obesity - increases risk for heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancers, joint disorders, GERD, sleep apnea - heartburn, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, GI problems |
(Binge-eating Disorder) treatment | - focus on healthy foods, self-acceptance, awareness of hunger/fullness, engaging progressively in physical activity, psychotherapy - food diaries to show realistic picture of quantity consumption |
