CCMA CH 4 REVIEW (Nutrition - Water)

TermDefinition
water - human body is about 50-80% + people can live longer w/o food than water - need about 2-3L or 64-96 oz per day
water functions -transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout the body - remove wastes - regulate body temperature through perspiration - providing basic component of blood and other bodily fluid
water outputs body loses about 1,750-3,000 mL each day (urine, stool, sweat, water vapor in breath)
dehydration too little water intake or excessive vomiting/diarrhea - adversely affects body temperature, heart rate, mental and physical functioning - signs + symptoms: fatigue, weakness, dizziness, loss of balance, delirium, exhaustion
too much water **does not adversely affect healthy people (eliminated through urine) - in infants, athletes or people with certain medical conditions cause hyponatremia, if sodium losses are not replaced
foods with water - almost all foods contain water, except oils - fruits and vegetables contain the most but do not rely completely on foods for water intake
indications for the needs of water - thirst - darker colored urine (ideal is pale yellow)
bottled water - convenient but not environmentally friendly - some have added vitamins, minerals, herbs, flavorings, sugar, caffeine, or colorings that are not necessary *caffeine can act as a diuretic and eliminate water the body might need
