CCMA CH 4 REVIEW (Nutrition - General Definitions/Information)
Term | Definition |

nutrients | organic or inorganic materials the body needs for energy and cellular activities like growth, repair, disease resistance, fluid balance, and thermoregulation |
essential | body cannot produce them (ex. some proteins) |
nonessential | body can produce (ex. Vitamin D and cholesterol) |
begins with digestion | body breaks down all the nutrients in the diet into substance it can use |
nutrients that contain calories | proteins, carbohydrates, fats - provide energy for the body - energy levels are based on multiple factors: basal metabolism, activity level, age, sex, etc. |
nutrients that DO NOT contain calories | water, vitamins, minerals, fiber |
caloric intake | - young adults need about 1800-2200 calories per day - if caloric intake is exceeded regularly, weight gain can occur - if caloric intake is not met regularly, weight loss can occur |
Body Mass Index (BMI) | can estimate where a patient falls on the weight/height continuum BMI = mass/height^2 or kg/m^2 |
ideal diet | low in - fat, processed food high in - fiber from plant source/whole grains, staying within caloric limits, balance of nutrients |
