CCMA CH 6 REVIEW (Body Systems - Nervous)
| Term | Definition or Function |
|---|---|
| nervous system | controls all other body systems - divided into 2 main sections (CNS and PNS) |
| brain | - coordinates most of body activities - control center for body, thought, emotion, and judgement - has 4 lobes (frontal, parietal, occipital, temporal) |
| spinal cord | - provides pathway for nerve impulses travelling to and from the brain - extends from base of the brain to lumbar vertebrae through vertebral column |
| peripheral nerves | - includes 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves branching off the spinal cord - carries nerve signals between the body and the brain |
| neuron | functional unit of the nervous system |
| dendrites | has multiple branching structures |
| nucleus | directs cellular activities |
| cytoplasm | produces neurotransmitters and energy for the neruon |
| axon | stores neurotransmitters |
| central nervous system (CNS) | consists of the brain and spinal cord |
| afferent nerve cells | neurons - carry information about the body's environment to the CNS - neuron is able to generate an electrical impulse when stimulated |
| efferent nerve cells | carry responses from the CNS to the body to initiate action |
| peripheral nervous system (PNS) | consists of peripheral nerves throughout the body |
| somatic nervous system (SNS) | controls body's voluntary (skeletal) muscles |
| automatic nervous system (ANS) | controls body's automatic functions (breathing, digestion) |
| sympathetic nervous system | controls "fight or flight" stress response |
| parasympathetic nervous system | controls "rest & digest" to return body back to resting state |
