CCMA CH 6 REVIEW (Body Systems - Respiratory)

| respiratory system | - moves air in and out of lungs (respiration/breathing) - works w/ cardiovascular system to deliver oxygen to the body through blood and eliminates carbon dioxide |
| respiration | moving air in and out of the lungs |
| external respiration | exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide within lungs |
| internal respiration | exchange within the hemoglobin of a red blood cell |
| nose | - made of bones, cartilage, and skin - contains small hairs (cilia) to prevent large particles from entering |
| pharynx | during respiration, air enters through nose/mouth into pharynx (also part of the digestive system) |
| larynx | - superior to trachea - produces a person's voice |
| trachea | windpipe - extends from larynx and branches into bronchi - lined with cilia |
| lungs | two cone-shaped organs located in the chest - contains bronchi, alveoli, and many blood vessels - surrounded by pleura - left lung -- 2 lobes - right lung -- 3 lobes (larger) |
