CCMA CH 6 REVIEW (Body Systems - Gastrointestinal/Digestive)
Term | Definition or Function |
---|---|
gastrointestinal system | - AKA gastrointestinal tract - begins at mouth or oral cavity - digestion plays a vital role in the body's ability to maintain homeostasis |
mouth (oral cavity) | starting point - initiates digestion with mechanical (chewing) and chemical (saliva) |
pharynx | throat - passageway for food between oral cavity and esophagus (also part of respiratory) |
esophagus | muscular tube connecting mouth to stomach - uses wave-like contractions called peristalsis to propel food into stomach |
stomach | located below diaphragm in LUQ; contains rugae - receives food from esophagus and continues to breakdown using gastric juices - [then] propels food into small intestine |
small intestine | takes up most of the space within the abdominal cavity - 3 sections -- duodenum, jejunum, ileum - absorbs nutrients |
large intestine (colon) | - 5 sections -- cecum (connected to ileum, appendix found here), ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon - absorbs; feces is formed into solid waste product |
rectum | end of the colon that stores feces until defecation |
anus | - end of rectum - opens to the outside of the body, allowing for elimination of feces |
liver | - large organ located in RUQ - produces bile to needed to break down fats |
gallbladder | - located inferior to the liver; connected to duodenum - stores bile |
pancreas | - posterior to the stomach; connected to the duodenum - produces enzymes that aid with digestion |
