CCMA CH 6 REVIEW (Body Systems - Gastrointestinal/Digestive)

Term Definition or Function
gastrointestinal system - AKA gastrointestinal tract - begins at mouth or oral cavity - digestion plays a vital role in the body's ability to maintain homeostasis
mouth (oral cavity) starting point - initiates digestion with mechanical (chewing) and chemical (saliva)
pharynx throat - passageway for food between oral cavity and esophagus (also part of respiratory)
esophagus muscular tube connecting mouth to stomach - uses wave-like contractions called peristalsis to propel food into stomach
stomach located below diaphragm in LUQ; contains rugae - receives food from esophagus and continues to breakdown using gastric juices - [then] propels food into small intestine
small intestine takes up most of the space within the abdominal cavity - 3 sections -- duodenum, jejunum, ileum - absorbs nutrients
large intestine (colon) - 5 sections -- cecum (connected to ileum, appendix found here), ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and sigmoid colon - absorbs; feces is formed into solid waste product
rectum end of the colon that stores feces until defecation
anus - end of rectum - opens to the outside of the body, allowing for elimination of feces
liver - large organ located in RUQ - produces bile to needed to break down fats
gallbladder - located inferior to the liver; connected to duodenum - stores bile
pancreas - posterior to the stomach; connected to the duodenum - produces enzymes that aid with digestion
