CCMA CH 6 REVIEW (Body Systems - Lymphatic)

Term Definition or Function
lymph nodes small, glandular structures concentrated in the neck, axilla, and groin, which produce and store lymphocytes, and are home to macrophages that filter lymph
lymph nodules masses of lymphoid tissue comprised of macrophages and lymphocytes (not encapsulated)
thymus - located posterior to the sternum - large in children and atrophies after adolescence - responsible for production and maturation of T-cells
spleen - largest lymphatic organ, located in upper-left abdominal quadrant - produces macrophages that filter the blood
interstitial fluid - tissue fluid found between the cells - once collected and filtered = lymph
