| skeletal system | - give the body structure and poster - protect internal organs from injury - attachment points for muscles |
| axial skeleton | - 80 bones - Skull, vertebrae, and ribs |
| appendicular skeleton | - 126 bones - Arms, legs, and pelvic girdle |
| ligaments | attaches bone to bone for joint stability |
| red bone marrow | found in bones ; responsible for producing new blood cells (hematopoiesis) |
| bones store calcium | essential for proper cell function |
| long bones | - have epiphysis, diaphysis, and medullary cavity (contains yellow marrow) - ends covered in articular cartilage allowing joint movement w/o friction - femur, humerus, tibia, ulna, radius, fibula |
| short bones | typically small and round (ex. carpals, tarsals) |
| flat bones | majority of surface area is flat or slightly curved (ex. skull, ribs) |
| irregular bones | unusual shape that is typically related to their function (ex. vertebrae, pelvis) |
| sesamoid bones | small, round bones found in joints that are held in place by tendons (ex. patella) |
| upper extremities bones | scapula, clavicle, humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges |
| lower extremities bones | pelvic girdle, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges |
| axial skeleton bones | skull, cervical vertebrae, thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, ribs |
