CCMA CH 3 REVIEW (Basic Pharmacology - General Definitions)

Pharmacology | the study of medications: how they act on the body (both good and bad), as well as their classifications and various properties |
brand/trade name | assigned by t heir medications manufacturer, identifies the medication as the property of the company, begins with a capital letter |
generic name | a noncommercial name for a medication, usually less complex than the medication's chemical name and often more complex than a brand or trade name |
Medication schedules | the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA) created five schedules for controlled substance, according to their potential for abuse and addiction |
Schedule 1 | - high potential for abuse - no approved medical use in the United States - illegal and providers may not provide them. EX) heroine, mescaline, and LSD |
Schedule 2 | - high potential for abuse - considered dangerous ; can lead to psychological and physical dependence - providers must give patients a handwritten prescription with no refills. EX) morphine, oxycodone, hydrcodone, and methamphetamine |
Schedule 3 | - moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence - providers must give handwritten prescription - may refill 5 times in 6 months EX) ketamine, anabolic steroids, and testosterone |
Schedule 4 | - low potential for abuse and dependence - providers must sign prescriptions for these substances - may refill 5 times in 6 months EX) diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, clonazepam |
Schedule 5 | - substances that contain limited quantities of some narcotics - usually for antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgestic purposes - provider must sign prescriptions for these substances - may refill 5 times in 6 months |
absorption | the medication goes from the site of entry into the body through the gastrointestinal tract, subcutaneous tissue, veins, other sites, and into the blood stream |
distribution | the medication goes from the bloodstream to the various sites of action: organs and tissues in the body |
excretion | the removal of a medications metabolites from the body |
allergic reaction | an immunologic hypersensitivity reaction resulting from the unusual sensitivity of a patient to a particular medication; a type of adverse drug event |
sedation | the induction of a calm, relaxed, often sleepy state |
enteric coating | outside coating to minimize the negative effects on the stomach of medication - 1) Cellulose acetate phthalate 2) Shellac (35% alcohol, pharmaceutical glaze) |
