Offense and defense
Question | Answer |

Offense | Objective is to invade an opponent’s area to score a goal / basket. |
Moving to open space | Process of moving away from a defender to a space that is open to receive a pass. |
Invade | Moving into an opponent’s territory/space with the intention to score. |
Lead Pass | Passing the ball in front of a moving person |
Cutting | Sharp, quick movements used to move away from a defender |
Jab Step | A fake step where the offensive player steps towards driving one direction, but then cuts towards another direction. |
Acceleration | Increasing your speed to get away from your opponent. |
Passing Lane | A clear path created to receive a pass. |
Pick | Process of one teammate screening another teammate’s defender in order to create space. The teammate setting a pick must be stationary. |
Give and go | Giving a pass to a teammate and then moving towards the goal looking to receive the pass back |
Defense | Objective is to defend an area or person in order to help prevent the offense from scoring a goal / basket. |
Person to Person Defense | Defensive strategy that requires a player to defend a specific opponent at all times |
Zone Defense | Defensive strategy that requires a player to defend a specific zone / area. |
Body Positioning | Position your body between the ball and defender. When in possession of the ball, keep your body between the ball and defender |
Self space | The space that a person occupies |
Open space | unoccupied space |
Closed space | occupied space |
Strategy | a plan |
Communication | Process of talking / signaling to other teammates on your team in order to be more successful |
Fast Break | A situation where the offense is attacking the defense with more players (ex. 2 vs 1, 3 vs 2). |
Spatial Awareness | The ability to be aware of oneself in space |
