Hierarchy of Needs Lower needs should be met before an individual can strive for higher needs
Events that threaten an indiviual'ss safety New environment, marital problems, loss of job, injury, change in routine
Examples of psychological needs food, water, oxygen, eliminate waste, sleep protection from temperature extremes
Ways to satisfy love and affection Make friends, establish social contacts, acceptance of others
self-actualization People have obtained their full potential or they are what they want to be
Direct Method: Hard Work Get good grades; earn a scholarships
Direct Method: Realistic Goals Work as a respiratory therapist to earn money for the education; consider a state college that's less expensive
Direct Method: Evaluate Situation Evaluate cost at other schools; obtain a job to cover expenses; learn to budget and save money
Direct Method: Cooperate with others live at home; share travel expenses with others; share books; fond someone to sponsor your education
Rationalization Reasonable excuse or acceptable explanation
Projection Placing blame on someone else or circumstances
Displacement Transferring feelings about one person to someone else
Compensation Substitution of one goal for another
Daydreaming Escape...good or bad
Repression Transfer of unacceptable feeling or thoughts
Suppression Refusing to deal with unacceptable feelings of thoughts
Denial Disbelief of an event that is too frightening to cope with
Withdrawal Cease to communicate or remove self physically from a situation
