Health The combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being
Physical Health How well your body functions; Healthy diet regular exercise, adequate sleep, proper medical and dental care.
Mental Health An individual's psychological well-being; how an individual copes with the demands of life.
Emotional Health The aspect of health that refers to how you react to events in your life. You express the appropriate feelings for the events you experience in life
Spiritual Health a deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life
Social Health aspect of psychological health that includes interactions with others individually and in groups
Wellness an overall state of well-being or total health
Health Continuum a sliding scale that spans the complete health range from a loss of health on one end & high level health at the other.
heredity Passing of traits from parents to offspring and a part of health you have no control over
Physical environment The sum of your surroundings & environment you live
social environment all the people you come into contact with on a daily basis
culture the beliefs ,customs, and behavior of a group
first aid the immediate, temporary care given to an ill or injured person until professional medical care can be provided
Good Samaritan laws statutes that protect rescuers from being sued for giving emergency care
bystander effect the tendency for any given bystander to be less likely to give aid if other bystanders are present
universal precautions steps taken to prevent the spread of disease through blood and other body fluids when providing first aid or health care
chain of survival a sequence of actions that maximize the victim's chances of survival
defibrillator a device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) a first-aid procedure that combines rescue breathing and chest compressions to supply oxygen to the body until normal body functions can resume
rescue breathing an emergency technique in which a rescuer gives air to someone who is not breathing
shock a life-threatening condition in which the heart is not delivering an adequate supply of blood to the body
fracture a break in a bone
dislocation a separation of a bone from its normal position in a joint
unconsciousness the condition of not being alert or aware of your surroundings
concussion a jarring injury to the brain that can cause unconsciousness
poison Any substance that causes injury, illness, or death when it enters the body
poison control center a round-the-clock service that provides emergency medical advice on how to treat victims of poisoning
venom a poisonous secretion
hurricane a powerful storm that generally forms in tropical areas, producing winds of at least 74 miles per hour, heavy rains, and sometimes tornadoes,
tornado a whirling, funnel-shaped windstorm that causes destruction as it advances along the ground in a narrow path
blizzard a snowstorm with winds that reach 35 miles an hour or more
flash floods floods in which a dangerous volume of water builds up in a short time
earthquake a series of vibrations in the earth caused by a sudden movement of the earth's crust
emergency survival kit a set of items you will need in an emergency situation
EPA an independent federal agency established to coordinate programs aimed at reducing pollution and protecting the environment
FEMA prepares for, prevent, respond to and recover from disasters. prepares for, prevents, mitigates the effects of, responds to, and recovers all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terrorism
FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety efficacy and security our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation
OSHA a government agency in the Department of Labor to maintain a safe and healthy work environment
NIH the federal agency that funds and conducts biomedical research
TSA A federal agency within the Department of Homeland Security that focuses primarily on transportation security matters.
CDC is a federal agency that conducts and supports health promotion, prevention and preparedness activities in the United States with the goal of improving overall public health
Department of Homeland Security US federal agency created in 2002 to coordinate national efforts against terrorism, it was created after the 9/11 attacks
ARC works with other agencies to provide a relief service after a disaster (not responsible for developing local disaster plan)
Emergency Alert System (EAS) A system by which information may be disseminated to the public by official sources during an emergency or potential emergency, using broadcast and print media, provides instructions on survival and health preservation actions
HHS created to protect the health of all Americans and providing essential human services. Its motto is "Improving the health, safety, and well-being of America"
SAMHSA works to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America's communities.
