Pregnancy

QuestionAnswer
Uterus A hollow muscular organ that provides a place for the baby to grow before birth; also called the womb
Contraction The tightening of a muscle. Buring labor the muscle that does this is the uterus
Embryo A fertilized egg after it has attached itself to the wall of the uterus
Amniotic Sac A sac developed in pregnancy inside the uterus containing amniotic fluid. The fluid helps protect the baby during pregnancy
Placenta The structure that allows the baby to get what it needs from the mother. It is disc shaped and attached to the wall of the uterus.
Umbilical Cord It connects the embryo to the placenta. It contains three blood vessels
Vagina The female reproductive structure that receives the sperm and the muscular tube the baby passes through during birth.
Fetus A developing baby from the ninth week of pregnancy to birth
Cervix A ring of very strong muscles at the lower part of the uterus
Labor Regular contractions of the uterus that open and dilate the cervix, allowing the baby and placenta to be pushed out
Dilation The process of opening. The cervix will open to a size of 10 cm to allow the baby to be pushed out of the uterus and into the vagina.
Conception When an egg cell meets a sperm cell
