red blood cells, erythrocyte blood cells that transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. (RBC)
white blood cell, leukocyte blood cells that protect the body from viruses and other harmful bacteria. (WBC)
basophil A white blood cell that fights/bacterial infections and viruses.
eosinophil A white blood cell that is responsible for fighting multicellular parasites.
platelets cell fragments in the blood that are essential for blood clotting
lacteals lymph vessels in small intestine that absorb fat into bloodstream.
chyle the white/pale yellow fatty substance in lymph vessels that's absorbed by lacteals.
immunity disease protection induced by exposure to an antigen
antigen the introduction of a foreign substance that causes the immune system to produce antibodies.
active immunity a long-lasting immunity that results from stimulating the body to produce its own antibodies
passive immunity a short-lasting immunity that results from foreign antibodies
macrocytosis large red blood cells
poikilocytosis large, irregularly shaped red blood cells
anemia condition of the blood not having enough healthy red blood cells
aplastic anemia condition in which the body stops making new blood cells
iron deficiency anemia condition of which there is too little iron in the blood
erythroblastosis fetalis the red blood cells of a fetus are destroyed in a maternal immune reaction resulting from a blood group incompatibility between the fetus and its mother.
Rh factor antigen on the surface of red blood cells on the Rh blood group system
Hemochromatosis hereditary disorder with an excessive buildup of iron deposits in the body
phlebotomy, venotomy incision/puncture of a vein to withdraw blood for testing
Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) a bunch of tests used as a general screen for disease
blood culture a test of a blood sample to find germs that can cause an infection
CD4 cell count a measure of the number of cluster of differentiation cells in the blood
Prothrombin Time (PT) measures activity of prothrombin in the blood
hemoglobin test test to determine the blood level of hemoglobin
blood indices Average red blood cell size (MCV) Hemoglobin amount per red blood cell (MCH)
