Middle Ear this part of the ear vibrates sounds from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear.
tympanic membrane this drum like structure takes collected sounds from the external acoustic meatus and amplifies it to the middle ear. (tympanum)
malleus this the first of the 3 auditory ossicles in the middle ear. (hammer)
incus the second (middle) auditory ossicle. (anvil)
stapes the third (last) auditory ossicle. (stirrup)
oval window the membrane covered opening between the middle ear and internal ear.
perilymph fluid within the bony ladyrinth in the internal ear.
endolymph fluid within the membranous ladyrinth on the internal ear.
utricle the biggest of two sacs within the membranous labyrinth of the vestibule in the inner ear
saccule the smallest of two sacs within the membranous labyrinth of the vestibule in the inner ear
otalgia, otodynia ear pain
otorrhea drainage of liquid from the ear
tinnitus ringing/buzzing of the ears.
myringitis, tympanitis inflammation of eardrum
aerotitis media inflammation of middle ear due to changes in atmospheric pressure. Ex: taking off in an airplane
otosclerosis hardening of boney tissue in the ear
Meniere's disease disorder of the ear that leads to vertigo ( dizziness) and hearing loss.
conductive hearing loss sound that can not get through the outer ear to the middle ear.
presbyacusis hearing loss because of old age
audiogram record of hearing measurement.
brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) measures the functioning of the auditory nerve and auditory pathways in the brainstem.
brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) test to measure the brain wave activity that occurs in response to clicks or certain tones.
microsurgery surgery with the use of a microscope used on delicate tissue, such as the ear
otoplasty surgical repair of the external ear
