| compact bone | seen on the outer layer of bones, its a tightly solid bone covering. |
| spongy bone, cancellous bone | mesh-like bone tissue found in the interior of bones, and surrounding the medullary cavity |
| short bones | square-shaped bones found in wrists and ankles. |
| irregular bones | vertebrae and face |
| sesamoid bones | round bones found near joints like the knee ( patella). |
| medullary cavity | hollow part of bone that has bone marrow. |
| fracture line | line of the break in a broken bone. |
| open fracture | broken bone with an open wound, aka: compound fracture |
| chrondromalacia | the softening of cartilage. |
| degenerative joint disease | wearing away of the articular cartilage within the joints, aka: osteoarthritis. |
| osteoarthritis (OA) | most common form of arthritis due to aging, aka: degenerative arthritis and degenerative joint disease . |
| ankylosis | stiff joint condition |
| spastic | uncontrolled contractions of skeletal muscles |
| rigor, rigidity | stiffness; stiff muscle |
| hypertrophy | increase in the size of tissue like muscle |
| flaccid | flabby muscle tone |
| exostosis | projection from a bone that develops from cartilage |
| crepitation | grating sound made by the movement of a joint or by broken bones, aka: crepitus |
| atrophy | shrinking of muscle size |
| goniometer | used to measure joint angles |
| range of motion (ROM) | total motion possible in a joint, described by the terms related to body movements |
| supination | turning of the the palmar surface or plantar surface upward or forward. |
| pronantion | turning of the palmar surface or plantar surface downward or backward. |
