What Organs Effects of Alcohol on the Body? Heart, Brain, Blood Vessels, Stomach, Liver, and Pancreas.
How does Alcohol effect the Heart? High blood pressure, damage to the cardiac muscle.
How does Alcohol effect the Blood Vessels? Hardening of arteries and veins making them less flexible.
How does Alcohol effect the Brain? Destruction of brain cells, nerves cells around the body are damaged resulting in numbness in hands/feet.
How does Alcohol effect the Stomach? Irritation to the stomach lining causing open sores (ulcers).
How does Alcohol effect the Liver? Damage may result in cirrhosis (see definition earlier).
How does Alcohol effect the Pancreas? Inflammation of the pancreas may affect insulin production (diabetes).
What are the Influencing Factors of alcohols? Body Size, Time, Gender, Amount, Food, Medicine.
How is body size an influencing factor? Larger people are affected somewhat less than smaller people with the same amount of alcohol consumption.
How is time an influencing factor? The quicker a person drinks the more intoxicated s/he will get.
How is gender an influencing factor? Alcohol moves faster <in general> into the bloodstream of females.
How is amount an influencing factor? High levels of alcohol in the bloodstream may result in poisoning.
How is food an influencing factor? Having food in the stomach will slow down the passage of alcohol into the blood.
How is medicine an influencing factor? Alcohol effects may be intensified when combine with medicine.
What alcohol % is beer by volume? 12oz BEER (5% alcohol by volume).
What alcohol % is wine by volume? 4oz WINE (12-15% alcohol by volume).
What alcohol % is Vodka/Whiskey by volume? 1.5oz VODKA/WHISKEY (40% alcohol by volume).
How does BAC Work? A Blood Alcohol Concentration (or BAC) of 0.08 means a person is legally intoxicated (possibility of jail and/or loss of driver’s license).
What does BAC stand for? Blood Alcohol Concentration.
How does BAC work for people under the age of 21? For persons under the age of 21, a BAC above 0 is illegal.
How many stages of alcoholism are there? 3.
What is stage 1 of alcoholism? 1. Casual use becomes more regular. 2. The drinker soon begins needing alcohol to cope with daily life. 3. The drinker starts lying or making excuses for their drinking.
What is stage 2 of alcoholism? 1. While continuing to drink, the body begins to become dependent. 2. The drinker begins denying that there is a problem.
What is stage 3 of alcoholism? 1. The problem is now clear to other people. 2. The drinker is very addicted and out of control.
How many stages or recovery are there? 4.
What is stage 1 of recovery? The alcoholic admits to having a problem.
What is stage 2 of recovery? Body’s adjustment to not using alcohol.
What is stage 3 of recovery? Help is given to the alcoholic to try living without alcohol.
What is stage 4 of recovery? Alcoholic takes responsibility for his/her life and stays sober.
Name the first 4 steps in order? Admission, Detoxification, Counseling, Recovery.
What are the 5 reasons to not drink alcohol? 1. It’s illegal. 2. It disappoints those who care about you. 3. It is very harmful to your body and overall health. 4. It interferes with activities (sport, band, etc). 5. It clouds your judgment; interferes with your decision making skills.
What is the S.T.O.P Guidelines? S – Say no in a firm voice. T – Tell why not. O – Offer another idea. P – Promptly leave. .
What are the first 2 statistics about alcohol? 1. Almost 2/3 of college suicides involve alcohol. 2. Half of all traffic deaths of people under 25 involve alcohol.
What are the last 2 statistics about alcohol? 3. Almost a quarter of all violent crimes committed by teens involve alcohol. 4.Between 1/3 and 2/3 of date rape cases among teens and college students involve alcohol.
