what are the 2 types of lymphocytes? B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes
what is the function of the B-lymphocytes? they produce antibodies to suppress and destroy antigens
what is the function of T-lymphocytes? they recognise infected and abnormal cells and destroy them
what is lymph? colourless, watery fluid formed from tissue fluid that contains lymphocytes
what's the lymphatic network responsible for? carries lymph and assists the blood in returning tissue fluid from the tissues back to the blood system and heart
what are lymph nodes? oval-shaped structures covered with connective tissue
what's the function of lymph nodes? they filter and trap cell debris which may cause infection so the lymph entering the blood doesn't contain any impurities
where are superficial nodes commonly found? they are found in the neck, armpits and groin
where are deep lymph nodes commonly found? they are found alongside blood vessels in the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic cavities.
what are lymph capillaries? tubes closed at one end, originating in the spaces between tissues.
what do lymph vessels contain? one-way valve to prevent backflow of fluid
are lymphocytes red blood cells or white blood cells? white blood cells, which are responsible for immunity
where are lymphocytes produced and matured? in lymphatic organs such as lymph nodes, the thymus gland, spleen and tonsils
