estrogen | hormone that is responsible for the development of female secondary sex characteristics |
progesterone | hormone that regulates uterine conditions during pregnancy |
pineal gland | located in the center of the brain; secretes melatonin and seratonin |
melatonin | hormone that is involved with circadian rhythm; affects the onset of puberty |
serotonin | hormone that constricts blood vessels and acts as a neurotransmitter |
growth hormone | hormone that influences growth |
prolactin | hormone that stimulates breast development and milk production during pregnancy |
oxytocin | hormone released by the posterior pituitary that influences urine contraction |
testes | located on both sides within the scrotum in the male; secretes testosterone |
testosterone | affects masculinization and reproduction |
thymosin | hormone that regulates immune response |
thyroid | located in the front of the neck |
thyroxine | thyroid hormone that regulates metabolism |
glucosuria | glucose in the urine |
exophthalmus | protrusion of one or both eyeballs, often because of thyroid dysfunction or a tumor behind the eyeball |
hypercalcemia | an abnormally high level of calcium in the blood |
hypocalcemia | abnormally low level of calcium in the blood |
hirsutism | an excessive growth of hair, especially in unusual places |
hyperglycemia | abnormally high level of glucose in the blood |
hypoglycemia | abnormally low level of glucose in the blood |
hyperkalemia | abnormally high level of potassium in the blood |
hypokalemia | deficient level of potassium in the blood |
metabolism | all chemical processes in the body that result in growth, generation of energy, elimination of waste, and other body functions |
polydipsia | excessive thirst |
polyuria | excessive urination |
pancreatitis | inflammation of the pancreas |
hypoparathyroidism | hyposecretion of the parathyroid glands |
hyperparathyroidism | hypersecretion of the parathyroid glands, usually caused by a tumor |
goiter | enlargement of the thyroid caused by thyroid dysfunction, tumor, lack of iodine in the diet, or inflammation |
