Medical Terminology of Nervous System and Psychiatry

central nervous system | brain and spinal cord |
brain | portion of the central nervous system contained within the cranium |
fissures | deep grooves in the brain |
sensory nerves | nerves that conduct impulses from body parts and carry sensory information to the brain |
dysphasia | impairment in speech production and inability to arrange words in an understandable way |
Glasgow coma scale | a neurologic scale used to assess levels of consciousness |
dementia | an impairment of intellectual function characterized by memory loss, disorientation, and confusion |
epilepsy | disorder affecting the central nervous system; characterized by recurrent seizures |
meningioma | benign tumor of the coverings of the brain |
radiography | x-ray imaging |
reflex testing | test performed to observe the body's response to a stimulus |
neuroplasty | surgical repair of a nerve |
hypnotic | drug that induces sleep |
dysphoria | a restless, dissatisfied mood |
mania | state of abnormal elation and increased activity |
neurosis | a psychological condition in which anxiety is prominent |
cognitive therapy | treatment to change unwanted patterns of thinking |
ADHD | attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder |
BD | bipolar disorder |
CSF | cerebrospinal fluid |
MS | multiple sclerosis |
OCD | obsessive-compulsive disorder |
SAD | seasonal affective disorder |
craniotomy | incision into the skull to approach the brain |
temporal lobe | portion of the brain that lies below the frontal lobe; responsible for hearing, taste, and smell |
frontal lobe | anterior section of each cerebral hemisphere; responsible for voluntary muscle movement and personality |
parietal lobe | portion posterior to the frontal lobe; responsible for sensations such as pain, temperature, and touch |
occipital lobe | portion posterior to the parietal and temporal lobes; responsible for vision |
hypothalamus | control center for the automatic nervous system located near the pituitary gland |
tactile stimulation | evoking a response by touching |
Huntington disease | hereditary disease of the central nervous system characterized by bizarre, involuntary body movements and progressive dementia |
myelitis | inflammation of the spinal cord |
