burns | to receive a sunburn, severity and location of a burn determine whether you should go to the hospital |
dislocation | an injury in which a bone has been forced out of its normal position in a joint |
strain | overstretching and possible tearing of a muscle due to overuse or misuse |
sprain | injury to the ligaments at a joint |
poison | something that causes illness or death on contact or if swallowed or inhaled |
fracture | a crack or break in a bone |
consent | to permit, approve, or agree |
bystander | a person who is present when something happens and who sees it but does not take part in it |
violence | physical force that is used to harm people or damage property |
acquaintance | someone who you have met and know slightly, but not well |
consequences | a result of one's actions and decisions |
cyperbullying | using a computer, social media to harass other people |
wellness | state of good health achieved by balancing your physical, mental emotional and social health |
immunization | the fact or process of becoming immune |
communicable | capable of being easily transmitted i.e. corona virus |
noncommunicable | disease not transmitted through contact with an infected person |
acute | an injury that happens suddenly |
chronic | an injury that develops over a period of time |
noninfectious | a disease that is not caused by a pathogen |
fetal alcohol syndrome | a group of birth defects that affect an unborn baby that has been exposed to alcohol |
depressant | a drug that slows body functioning |
alcoholics anonymous (AA) | support and recovery organization for members whose purpose is to stay sober and help others recover from alcohol use disorder |
refusal skills | strategy to avoid doing something you don't want to do |
dietary guidelines | a set of suggestions designed to help people develop healthy eating habits and increase physical activity levels |
saturated fat | typically solid at room temperature, i.e. butter, can cause arterial blockage |
malnutrition | poor nourishment caused by lack of nutrients |
overweight | weighs more than is considered healthy or attractive |
obesity | weighing at least 20% more than your recommended weight |
sodium | aka salt, helps regulate blood pressure |
negotiation | discussion of a conflict to reach an agreement |
tolerance | a condition in which a person needs more of a drug to feel the original effects of the drug |
sympathy | when someone is in a bad situation, you are sorry for them , and show this in the way you behave toward them |
circulatory system | body system made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood |
digestive system | group of organs and glands that work together to digest food |
