heatstroke | when the body cannot control its temperature |
heat exhaustion | condition caused by too much water loss through sweating |
hypothermia | your body temperature is below normal |
frostbite | damage to skin and other tissues caused by extreme cold |
abuse | treating someone in a harmful way physically, emotionally or sexually |
neglect | failure of adult to provide a child basic care, such as food, clothing or shelter |
pedestrian | a person who goes or travels on foot; walking |
bullying | a person who intimidates smaller and weaker people |
social media | websites and other online means of communication |
hygiene | the practice of keeping yourself clean |
type 1 diabetes | body does not make enough insulin |
type 2 diabetes | body makes insulin, but cannot use it properly |
cancer | group of diseases that causes uncontrolled cell growth |
heart disease | disease that damages heart tissue and may lead to heart attacks |
allergies | an overreaction of the body to things that are usually harmless |
asthma | disease of the respiratory system causing shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing |
tolerance | condition in which a person needs more of a drug to feel its original effect |
stimulant | drugs that speed up the brain and heart |
depressant | drugs that slow the body down |
nicotine | an addictive dangerous chemical found in all tobacco products |
serving size | a single portion of food or drink |
nutrition facts label | label on the outside of packages of food that states the number of servings in the container, number of calories in each serving, and the quantity of nutrients in each serving |
cholesterol | a waxy substance found in fat, tissues, and blood of all animals |
self-esteem | a measure of how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself |
self-image | the idea, conception, or mental image one has of oneself |
peer pressure | the feeling you should do something because your friends want you to |
goals | something that someone works toward and hopes to achieve |
refusal skills | a strategy to avoid doing something that you don't want to |
nervous system | senses changes in our bodies and surroundings, allows different parts of body to communicate, reacts to stimuli, helps us learn, speak, and remember things |
respiratory system | consists of the nose, mouth, throat, voice box, trachea, and lungs |
