What is plaque? a sticky, colorless film that acts on sugar to form acids that destroy tooth enamel and irritate games.
How does plaque become tartar? Plaque becomes tartar when it hardens.
Describe how a cavity forms in a tooth. when plaque isn't removed often, or well enough, the bacteria can grow. the acid they produce removes the enamel. when the enamel is broken down, a cavity forms.
Define Halitosis and how to avoid it. bad breath. It can be avoided by brushing your teeth, good dental care, and not smoking
Describe the roll of rods and cones found in the retina. Rods are very sensitive to light, and allow us to see in dim light. Cones function in bright light and allow us to see colors.

What is the function of the optic nerve? akes visual information gathered from your eye and transmits it using a series of electrical impulses to the parts of your brain that act as vision centers, allowing you to make sense of what you are seeing.
Describe the symptoms of tinnitus? is a condition in which a ringing, buzzing, whistling, roaring, hissing, or other sound is heard in the absence of external sound.
What are three behaviors that can help keep your ears healthy? use ear plugs, control the volume, don't use cotton swabs
What part of the ear is responsible for balance.? the inner ear. vestibule and semicircular canal
What structures are part of the outer ear? pinna (also called the auricle), the ear canal, and the outer layer of the eardrum (also called the tympanic membrane).

Identify four types of bones and give an example of each. Flat Bones Protect Internal Organs Long Bones Support Weight and Facilitate Movement Short Bones Are Cube-shaped Sesamoid Bones Reinforce Tendons Irregular bones often have a fairly complex shape, which helps protect internal organs.
What is ossification? the process by which bone is formed, renewed, and repaired.
Describe three way to care for your skeletal system. Calcium, vitamin D and phosphorus supplements. Weight training and walking proper diet.
Identify and describe two types of injuries to joints. Strains: occur when muscles and/or tendons are overextended Sprains: injuries to ligaments that hold bones together Fractures: breaks, chips or cracks in bones Dislocations: separation of a bone its normal position at a joint
Define carpal tunnel syndrome. What type of injury is it. Carpal tunnel is a repetitive motion injury that occurs when swollen ligaments and tendons in the wrist cause numbness, a burning or tingling sensation in the thumb and forefinger, pain and weakness in the hand.
Identify one body function performed by muscles under involuntary control. digestion
Identify and describe the three types of muscles Smooth muscles- act on the lining of passageways and internal organs. Skeletal muscles- are attached to bone and cause body movements. Cardiac muscle- is a type of strained muscle that forms the wall of the heart.
Describe muscle strain and muscular dystrophy. result when a muscle is stretched or partially torn as a result of over exertion. Muscular Dystrophy is an inherited disorder in which skeletal muscle fibers are progressively destroyed. There is no cure.
Define tendinitis the inflammation of a tendon, can be caused by injury, overuse, or aging.
What is the function of sensory neurons? are nerve cells within the nervous system responsible for converting external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses.
Identify the two organs that make up central nervous system. Impulses in the body are carried to and from the spinal cord and the brain, the two organs that make up the central nervous systems.
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system? Nervous extend to various parts of the body along the length of the spinal cord.
Name and describe two types of head injuries. Concussion- the mildest and most common type of brain injury results in a temporary loss of consciousness, sometimes only lasting only a few seconds. Contusion- a bruising of the brain tissues that can result in a coma
Describe cerebral palsy non progressive neurological disorders that are the result of damage to the brain before, during, or just after birth or in early childhood.

What is OSHA's role? the agency in the federal government that is responsible for promoting safe and healthful conditions in the workplace.
List three safety rules for recreational safety. Know your limits; carry plenty of water; bring supplies; wear protective clothing; tell people your plans; plan ahead for the weather
List three recommendations for staying safe when camping or hiking Stay in specified campsites and hike only in approved areas; never hike alone; be knowledgeable about poisonous plants, insects, and snakes; be cautious around wildlife; be careful around campfires; don't drink water from lakes, streams, or rivers
What is hypothermia? When body temperature becomes dangerously low
What are three factors to help prevent injuries during winter sports Dress in layers and wear a hat; use appropriate safety equipment; make sure all equipment is in good working order
What are four safety precautions to follow when swimming? Learn to swim; don't swim alone; swim only in designated areas; if you get a muscle cramp, relax, float, and press/squeeze the muscle until it relaxes
What is a recommended minimum water depth for safe diving? Nine feet
What are PFD's When should you wear one? Life vest or life jacket; always wear one on boats and personal watercraft
List two precautions for swimming in lakes, rivers, or the ocean. Always swim with a buddy. Swim only in areas that have a lifeguard. Stay out of the water when you are very tired, very cold, or overheated. Follow all swimming rules posted at the swimming area. Obey the lifeguard's instruction.
