| Term | Definition |

| Disease | Any condition that negatively affects the normal functioning of the mind or body |
| Infectious Diseases | All diseases that are caused by the spread of germs |
| Pathogens | Microorganisms that cause disease |
| Bacteria | One-celled tiny organisms that come in many shapes and grow everywhere |
| Viruses | Smaller in size than bacteria and responsible for more infections than any other pathogen. |
| Fungi | An organism that usually causes diseases of the skin |
| Incubation period | The period of time from which a person becomes infected with a microorganism to the time when they actually have the symptoms allowing them to recognize the disease |
| carrier | A person who is carrying the disease but does not seem to be suffering from the illness. |
| resistance | The ability to fight the invading germ |
| Acute disease | Those diseases that develop suddenly with symptoms that are often severe |
| Chronic disease | Diseases that develop gradually and may persist for years |
| allergen | A substance to which a person’s body is particularly sensitive |
| Immune system | The group of organs and cells that works with the lymphatic system to fight germs. Also known as the body’s natural resistance. |
| antibodies | Special proteins produced by the lymphocytes in response to a foreign substance in the body |
| Lymphatic network | Vessels that circulate a special body fluid called lymph |
| lymphocytes | White blood cells manufactured by the lymph nodes to travel through the lymphatic system to fight off germs |
| B-cells | Lymphocytes that make antibodies that attack germ cells |
| T-cells | Lymphocytes that fight germs by several ways, that are different than the way the B-cells fight germs |
| Vaccine | A mixture of weakened or killed germ cells, given orally or through an injection. |
| Homeostasis | The process by which the body maintains a constant internal environment despite the external changes |
| Athletes foot | Example of fungi |
| Tapeworm | Example of parasite |
| flu | Example of a disease caused by virus |
| Strep | Example of a disease caused by bacteria |
| Malaria | Example of chronic disease |
| Penicillin | Used to destroy bacteria at the early stage |
| Spleen | Manufactures and stores white blood cells |
| Fever | A higher temperature may destroy some germs |
| Job | said, "Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?" |
| Skin | Your first physical protection against the attack of a pathogen |
