Define host A host is an organism from which a microogranism takes nourishment.
Define pathogen Pathogens are microorganisms that are disease-causing.
How do microorganisms cause illness? Microorganisms cause illness by producing toxins that affect the body, and by invading living cells to destroy them. They also cause allergic reactions.
What are the factors that affect the growth of microorganisms? The factors that affect the growth of microorganisms include food, moisture, temperature, oxygen, light, and dead/living matter.
How are microorganisms spread? Microorganisms spread through direct contact, indirect contact, airborne, oral route, and insects and pests.
What is a generalized infection and what are the signs/symptoms? A generalized infection enters the bloodstream, and affects the whole body. Symptoms include headache, fatigue, fever, increased pulse and respiration, vomitting, and diarrhea.
What is a localized infection and what are the signs/symptoms? A localized infection is limited to a specific part of the body. Symptoms include redness, swelling, heat, drainage, and pain at the site of the infection.
Define asepsis Asepsis is the destruction of the environment that allows pathogens to live, breed, and spread.
What is the process of disinfection? The process of disinfection eliminates pathogenic microorganisms, except bacterial spores, on inanimate objects by liquid chemicals or wet pasteurization.
What is PPE and what does it include? PPE is Personal Protective Equipment that is designed to protect workers from physical hazards. It includes clothing, helmets, and goggles.
What are the links for chain of infection? infectious agent -> reservior -> portal of exit -> mode of transmission -> portal of entry -> susceptible host
What is the number one way to prevent the spreading of infections? The number one way to prevent the spread of infection is by washing hands.
