hormones travel to other parts of the body and pass on messages that cause things to happen
glands groups of specialized cells that produce hormones
pituitary glands "master gland"; sends out hormones that tell the other glands what to do.
hypothalamus the real control master; it tells the pituitary gland when to release its hormones
cartilage soft, rubbery material that bends instead of breaking: bones are not fully developed until 25 yrs of age
