Aseptic Practices

TermDefinition
Nosocomial infection An infection acquired while in a medical facility
Surgical asepsis The techniques practiced to maintain a sterile environment in order to prevent microorganisms from entering a body, including sanitization, disinfection, and sterilization
Sanitization The inhibition or inactivation of pathogens by means of scrubbing and washing items
Sterilization The destruction of all microorganisms, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic, while using techniques such as heat, chemicals, high velocity electron bombardment, or ultraviolet light radiation.
Permeable Capable of allowing substances to pass through
Sterilization indicators Strips or take place inside equipment wrapper or in the sterilization chamber used to signify sterilization has occurred
Shelf life The length of time sterilize instruments are considered to be sterile
