Aseptic Practices

| Nosocomial infection | An infection acquired while in a medical facility |
| Surgical asepsis | The techniques practiced to maintain a sterile environment in order to prevent microorganisms from entering a body, including sanitization, disinfection, and sterilization |
| Sanitization | The inhibition or inactivation of pathogens by means of scrubbing and washing items |
| Sterilization | The destruction of all microorganisms, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic, while using techniques such as heat, chemicals, high velocity electron bombardment, or ultraviolet light radiation. |
| Permeable | Capable of allowing substances to pass through |
| Sterilization indicators | Strips or take place inside equipment wrapper or in the sterilization chamber used to signify sterilization has occurred |
| Shelf life | The length of time sterilize instruments are considered to be sterile |
