ethanol the type of alcohol in alcoholic beverages
depressant A drug that slows the central nervous system
intoxication the state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol or another substance and the person's physical and mental control is significantly reduced
binge drinking drinking five or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting
alcohol poisoning a severe and potentially fatal physical reaction to an alcohol overdose
psychological dependence a condition in which a person believes that a drug is needed in order to feel good or to function normally
Stage 1 of alcoholism abuse stage 1 of alcoholism abuse- the user has developed a dependence and denies a drinking problem
alcoholism A disease in which a person has a physical or psychological dependence on drinks that contain alcohol
blood alcohol concentration the amount of alcohol in a person's blood, expressed as a percentage
fetal alcohol syndrome A group of birth defects caused by the effects of alcohol on an unborn child
recovery the process of learning to live an alcohol-free life
sobriety Living without alcohol
Factors that Influence Alcohols effect body size, gender, food, rate of intake, amount, medicine
Alcohols effect on the brain loss of verbal skills, poor judgement & decision making, memory loss
Alcohols effects on society violence, crime, manslaughter, shattered dreams, economic hardship, mental illness
Driving while intoxicated injury to driver & others, arrest, jail time, 15K in fines, restricted driving privileges, high insurance rates

Stage 2 of alcoholism dependence the person cannot stop drinking, hides his drinking problem and performance in life suffers
