The Skin
| Term | Definition |

| Epidermis | outside layer made up of flat dead cells that wear away and are replaced from underneath. |
| Malpighian layer | bottom layer of epidermis, contains the pigment melanin. |
| Melanin | pigment which determines skin colour and helps to protect the skin from UV rays |
| Dermis | inside layer of skin |
| Blood vessels | control body temperature and supply oxygen and nutrients to skin cells |
| Nerves | allow skin to feel sensations e.g heat |
| Sweat glands | remove waste and excess water from the blood it is released through the pores to the surface of the skin |
| Oil glands/ Sebaceous glands | produce sebum to keep skin soft and the hair in good condition. |
| Adipose tissue | layer of fat cells located underneath the dermis which insulates the body and acts as an energy reserve |
