Lifestyle Diseases

TermDefinition
Atherosclerosis A disease characterized by the buildup of fatty materials on the inside walls of the arteries.
Benign Tumor An abnormal, but usually harmless cell mass.
High Blood Pressure Hypertension - "silent killer"
Cancer A disease caused by uncontrolled cell growth.
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) A disease or disorder that results from progressive damage to the heart and blood vessels.
Chemotherapy The use of drugs to destroy cancer cells.
Diabetes A disorder in which cells are unable to obtain glucose from the blood such that high blood-glucose levels.
Diabetic Coma A loss of consciousness that happens when there is too much blood sugar and a buildup of toxic substances in the blood.
Heart Attack The damage and loss of function of an area of the heart muscle.
Insulin A hormone that causes cells to remove glucose from the bloodstream.
Lifestyle Disease A disease that is caused partly by unhealthy behaviors and partly by other factors.
Malignant Tumor A mass of cells that invades and destroys healthy tissue.
Stroke A sudden attack of weakness or paralysis that occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is interrupted.
Angioplasty When a balloon is inserted into a blocked artery.
Angiography When dye is injected into the coronary arteries to look for blockages.
Biopsy Sample of tissue taken from the body that is examined.
Caution The word used to explain warning signs of cancer.
Controllable Risk Factors Your diet, weight, level of physical activity, sun exposure, and tobacco and alcohol use.
Electrocardiogram Detects damage to the heart and an irregular heartbeat - EKG
Gestational Diabetes Diabetes while pregnant
Ultrasound Helps doctors see the pumping of the heart and the action of the heart valves.
Uncontrollable Risk Factors Age, gender, ethnicity, heredity
