Dysuria Painful or difficult urination

Polyuria Elimination of large amounts of urine
BUN Blood Urea Nitrogen - elevation indicates kidney problems
ESWL extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy - used to break up stones in the body
ADH Antidiuretic hormone - Comes from posterior pituitary and helps to absorb fluids
CRF Chronic renal failure
ARF Acute Renal failure

HPV Human Papilloma virus - the most commonly transmitted sexual infection
HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus
CIN Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
Diuresis Increased rate of urination
Nephron The functional unit of the kidney (the parenchyma)
Nephr/o- Combining form meaning kidney
ur/o- Combining form meaning urine, urinary system
olig/o- combining form meaning scanty, few
Uter/o- Combining form for uterus
Oophor/o- Combining form for ovary
o/o- Combining form for ovum
metri/o- Combining form for uterus
oophorectomy Removal of an ovary
Hysterectomy Removal of the uterus
Hysterotomy Incision into the uterus
Mastitis Infection of the breast
Puerperium The period immediately after childbirth
Orchialgia Pain in the testes
Gestation The medical word for pregnancy
Gravida Word means pregnancy; refers to the number of pregnancies a woman has had.
Para Word refers to the number of live births a woman has had
Oogenesis The production of an ovum; occurs monthly after menarche
Glioma A nerve tumor made up of glia cells (nerve support cells)
Encephalopathy Any disease of the brain
Monoplegia Paralysis of one limb
Myoparesis Muscle weakness, which may feel like partial paralysis
Hemiparesis Weakness on one-half of the body
Hemiplegia Paralysis on half of the body
Vertigo Dizziness
Tinnitus Ringing in the ears
Cerumen Ear wax
Myringotomy Making a cut in the ear drum
Tympanotomy Making a cut in the ear drum
Conjunctivitis Infection of the membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the eye, also known as pink eye.
