What do bacteria in our intestines do? Protect from disease and create Vitamin K for blood clotting
What is the function of the esophagus? Pathway for food to travel to the stomach
What is the stomach responsible for? Breaking down food
How long are the intestines? About 25 feet long
Where does the process of digestion start? Mouth
What is saliva? A digestive juice found in the mouth
Food can stay in the stomach for up to how long? Approx 2 hours
What is the largest gland that secretes a liquid called bile that helps to digest fats? Liver
What gland helps the small intestine by breaking down proteins, carbohydrates and fats? Pancreas
What is the process by which the body gets rid of waste materials? Excretion
What is the system that removes waste from your body and controls water balance? Excretory System
What is another word for large intestine? Colon
What is the function of the kidneys? Filter water and waste materials from the blood, regulate amount of water and salt in the body
How can you care for your Digestive System? Eat at regular times each day, regular physical activity, take care of your teeth, drink 8-10 glasses of water every day
