Basic Terms

drug any substance, other than food, that changes the structure or function of the body
drug use taking legal drug in the manner that they are intended
drug misuse improper use of medicines
drug abuse the intentional improper or unsafe use of a drug
addiction losing control over use of a drug
dependence synonym for addiction
psychological addiction mentally craving a drug
physical addiction needing a drug physically to function normally
withdrawal symptoms that occur when a dependent person stops taking a drug
example of drug use drinking a cup of coffee (with caffeine)
example of drug misuse taking the asthma inhaler three times in 10 minutes
example of drug abuse a 15 year old choosing to drink alcohol
