| Term | Definition |

| Drug | any substance, other than food, that changes the structure or function of the body |
| Medicine | a legal substance either prescription or OTC that changes the body to fight injury,illness, or disease |
| Addiction | the state of losing control over the use of a drug, also having a strong craving for the drug |
| Physical Dependence | mental need, for body to function |
| Psychological Dependence | physical need, withdrawals occur when without the drug |
| Withdrawal | a group of symptoms that occur when a dependent person is without or stops taking drugs |
| Tolerance | the need of increasingly large amounts of alcohol to achieve the original effect |
| Synergistic | when drugs interact to produce greater effects then those produced alone |
| Antagonistic | when each drug's effect is reduced or canceled out by each other |
| Drug Use | use of drugs correctly, for medical purposes |
| Drug Misuse | use of drugs incorrectly, or using someone elses prescription |
| Drug Abuse | use of drugs for no medical reason or illegally |
| Prescription Drugs | can be purchased with doctors consent, potentially more harmful |
| Over-the-Counter Drugs | medicine sold legally without a doctors note |
| Dependence | a chemical need for the drug, and cannot function normally without it |
| Stimulants | a type of drug that increases the activity of the nervous system |
| Depressants | a drug that slows brain and body reactions |
| Hallucinogens | a drug that distorts perception, thought and mood |
| Club Drugs | drugs that first gained popularity at dance clubs and raves |
| Inhalants | a breathable chemical vapor that produces mind altering effects |
| Steroids | any of a large class of organic compounds with a characteristic molecular structure |
| Marijuana | leaves or flowers of a hemp plant |
| Gateway Drug | a habit-forming drug that, while not itself addictive, may lead to the use of other addictive drugs |
| Analgesic | any drug used to relive pain |
| Zero-Tolerance Law | a strict law where there are consequences for underage drinking |
| Reverse Tolerance | a condition where less and less alcohol causes intoxication |
| Intoxication | a state where a persons mental and physical abilities are impaired by a substance |
| BAL | blood alcohol level, expressed by a percent |
| Fetal Alcohol Syndrome | a group of birth defects caused by the effects of alcohol on an unborn child |
| FDA | food and drug administration, tests foods safety for consumers |
| Tar | dark, sticky substance formed when tobacco burns |
| Nicotine | a very addictive chemical in tobacco products |
| Carbon Monoxide | an odorless poisonous gas caused by tobacco |
| Second Hand Smoke | a combination of sidestream and mainstream smoke that effects anyone near smoker |
| Sidestream Smoke | smoke that comes directly from the cigarette into the air |
| Mainstream Smoke | smoke exhaled from the smoker's lungs into the air |
| Emphysema | a disorder in which the alveoli in the lungs do not function properly |
| Bronchitis | chronic inflammation of the membrane lining of the bronchial tubes |
| Cirrhosis | a disease of the liver, when blood flow is blocked |
| BAC | blood alcohol concentration, measured in degrees of intoxication |
