Term | Definition |

Drug | Any substance other than food that changes the structure or function of the body. |
Medicine | A legal drug that helps the body fight injury, illness, or disease |
Addiction | When the brain thinks it needs a substance to properly function |
Physical Dependence | When the body needs a substance to properly function. |
Psychological dependence | When the brain chemically needs a substance to properly function. |
Withdrawal | A group of symptoms that will occur when a dependent person stops taking a drug. |
Tolerance | When effects become reduced by frequent use. |
Drug interactions | When a person takes more than one drug |
Synergistic | Occurs when drugs interact to produce effects greater than those that each drug would produce alone |
Antagonostic | Occurs when each drug's effect is reduced or cancelled out by the other |
Drug Use | When drugs are taken properly as directed |
Drug Misuse | The improper us of medicines |
Drug Abuse | When a drug is intentionally improperly used |
(OTC) Over-the-counter drugs | A medicine that is sold legally at pharmacies and other stores without a doctor's prescription. |
Prescription Drugs | A drug that can only be acquired with a written note from a doctor which can only be purchased at a pharmacy. |
Stimulants | Drugs that increase activity of the nervous system |
Depressants | A drug that slows down brain and body functions |
Halucinogens | A drug that distorts perception, thought, and mood. |
Club Drugs | A drug which both strength and quality differ from person to person. Effects on a person are unpredictable and dangerous |
Inhalants | A breathable chemical vapor that produces mind-altering effects |
Steroids | Artificial forms of male hormone testosterone |
Marijuana | Leaves, stems, and flowering tops of hemp plant. |
Gateway Drug | A drug that is used as a gateway to using other "harder" drugs |
Analgesic | Pain-releiver |
Zero Tolerance Law | It is illegal for teens and others under 21 to use alcohol |
Reverse Tolerance | Where less and less of a substance causes intoxication |
BAC/BAL | Amount of alcohol in the blood |

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome | A group of birth defects caused by the effects of alcohol on an unborn child |

Sidestream Smoke | smoke that goes into the air directly from a cigarette |
Mainstream Smoke | Exhaled from a smoker's lungs |
Emphysema | Disorder in which aveoli in lungs can no longer function properly |
Bronchitis | Infection that causes the mucous membranes lining the bronchi in lings to become inflamed |
Cirrhosis | Disease where fat cells block up the blood flow in the liver and die leaving behind useless scar tissue. Is a result of heavy smoking. |
Dependence | When either the mind or body need a substance to properly function |
