| drug | any substance, other than food, that changes the structure or function of the body |
| physical dependence | physically needing a drug to function normally; without the drug, withdrawl occurs |
| psychological dependence | mentally craving a drug; think they need a drug to function normally |
| drug use | using drugs correctly for medical purposes |
| drug misuse | using drugs incorrectly |
| drug abuse | using drugs for no medical reason or when they are illegal |
| addiction | state of losing control over the use of a drug, accompanied by a strong craving for the drug |
| dependence | the condition that results when the brain develops a chemical need for a drug and cannot function normally without it |
| withdrawal | a group of symptoms that occur when a dependent person stops taking a drug |
| tolerance | the condition that results when repeated use of a drug causes it to have less of an effect on the brain |
| prescription drugs | a drug that can obtained only with a written order from a doctor and can be purchased only at a pharmacy |
| over-the-counter (OTC) drugs | a medicine that is sold legally in pharmacies and other stores without a doctor's prescription |
| stimulants | drugs that increase the activity of the central nervous system |
| depressants | a psychoactive drug that slows brain and body reactions |
| hallucinogens | a drug that distorts perception, thought, and mood |
| club drugs | drugs that first gained popularity at dance clubs and raves |
| inhalants | a breathable chemical vapor that produces mind-altering effects |
| anabolic steroids | artificial forms of the male hormone testosterone |
| marijuana | a drug made from the leaves, stems, and flowering tops of the hemp plant 'Cannabis sativa' |
| gateway drugs | a drug used as a gateway to using other "harder" drugs |
| analgesic | pain-reliever |
| zero tolerance law | a policy that enforces strict consequences for underage drinking |
| reverse tolerance | a condition in which less and less alcohol causes intoxication |
| intoxication | the state in which a person's mental and physical abilities are impaired by alcohol or another sudstance |
| BAC/BAL | the amount of alcohol in a person's blood, expressed as a percentage |

| fetal alcohol syndrome | a group of birth defects caused by the effects of alcohol on an unborn child |

| nicotine | a very addictive chemical in tobacco products |
| Carbon monoxide | an odorless, poisonous gas produced when substances are burned |
| second hand smoke | the combination of mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke |
| sidestream smoke | smoke that goes into the air directly from the cigarette |
| mainstream smoke | exhaled from a smoker's lungs |
| emphysema | a disorder in which alveoli in the lungs can no longer function properly |
| bronchitis | an infection that causes the mucous membranes lining the bronchi to become inflamed |
| cirrhosis | a disease in the liver in which it becomes filled with useless scar tissue and may lead to liver failure |
| synergistic | alcohol multiplies effect of another drug |
| antagonistic | alcohol rarely cancels out effects of another drug |
