Term | Definition |

Drug | A substance other than food, that changes the structure or function of the body. |
Depressants | A drug that slows the brain and body reactions. |
Zero-tolerance policy | A law that doesn't allow anyone under the age of 21, to drink. |
Medicine | Legal drugs that help the body fight injury, illness, or disease. |
over-the-counter drugs | A medicine sold legally in pharmacies and other stores w/o a doctor's prescription. |
Prescription Drug | A drug that can only be used with a written order from a doctor & are only sold at pharmacies. |
Drug misuse | The improper use of medicines. |
Drug abuse | When a drug is intentionally used improperly or unsafely. |
Psychological Dependence | When you mentally think you need the drug. |
Physical Dependence | When your body can't function without it. |
Addiction | The person no longer has control over his or her habit. |
Dependence | The brain develops a chemical need for that substance and cannot function normally without it. |
Withdrawl | A group of symptoms that occur when a dependent person stops taking a drug. |
tolerance | The condition that results when repeated use of a drug causes it to have less of an effect on the brain. |
Synergistic | Occurs when drugs interact to produce effects greater than those that each drug would produce alone. |
Antagonistic | Occurs when each drug's effect is canceled out or reduced by another. |
Drug use | Using drugs correctly for medical purposes. |
Stimulants | A drug that speeds up activities of the central nervous system. |
Hallucinogens | A drug that distorts perception. |
Club drugs | Drugs that first gained popularity at dance clubs and raves. |
Inhalants | A breathable chemical vapor that produces mind-altering effects. |
Anabolic Steroids | Artificial forms of the male hormone testosterone. |
Marijuana | Leaves of a hemp plants that causes a change in the way information is sent and is act upon. |
Gateway drug | Leading to using "harder" drugs |

Reverse tolerance | Where less and less of the substance/drug causes intoxication. |

BAC/BAL | Blood alcohol concentration, the amount of blood in a person's blood. |
Fetal alcohol syndrome | A group of birth defects caused by the effect of alcohol on the unborn child. |

Tar | The dark, sticky substance that forms when tobacco burns. |
Nicotine | A very addictive chemical in tobacco products. |
Carbon Monoxide | A odorless poisonous gas |
Second hand smoke | Inhaled by everyone near the smoker. Also the combo of mainstream and side stream. |
Sidestream smoke | Smoke that goes into the air directly from the cigarette |

Emphysema | A disorder in which alveoli in the lungs can no longer function properly. |
Bronchitis | An infection that causes the mucous membranes lining the bronchi to become inflamed. |
